“From the Frog Pond”
Last Spring during our Lenten season, two ministry teams were
established at
Clen-Moore
Church: The Caring
Friends Ministry Team and the Covenant Outreach Ministry Team.
Caring Friends is already, and will continue, making a mark in our
pastoral care of members and friends. Fourteen people also
covenanted to become a part of an Outreach Ministry Team with the
express goal of introducing at least one new person to our church
family in a year’s time. These folks will begin to get organized
this coming Fall season. They will be looking for some more
ambassadors for Christ and for Clen-Moore to unite with them in
their goal.
In II Corinthians 5:11 through the end of the chapter,
the Apostle Paul reminds us that we who are reconciled to God
through faith in Jesus Christ are commanded by God to become
ambassadors for Christ so God can make His appeal through us!
Imagine that! God has entrusted us with the message of reconciling
people around us to Christ.
Years ago, Rev. Dr. Ernest Campbell, then pastor of
the
Riverside
Church in
New York City said: “Once we are saved by God in
Christ, we become gardeners in the
Kingdom of
God.” God asks us to plant
seeds with winsome loving actions and words. We are to be God’s
ambassador in all the situations of our lives.
We need to recapture that idea. We need to help God’s
kingdom grow, not for the sake of numbers, but for the sake of
Christ! God is counting on us to make his appeal, and so often we
fail our Lord.
There is no question that
Clen-Moore
Church needs to grow, not
for numbers but for people.
You’ll be reading about two new start-up
Mission Action Teams (MATS) that
session has envisioned for us. They are to explore ways to be
missional by reaching out to people in our larger community as well
as to 18-45 years olds in our church. (Bob Wilson articulates these
challenges in another place in this Messenger. Please read it.)
You can help us be more hospitable and outreaching to
the people around us by becoming a Covenant Outreach Ministry
person---official or unofficial. Simply be aware that every day, in
every way, in every place, there will be a person in some sort of
situation who, knowing it or not, needs to see and hear the love of
Christ reflected in you.
Don’t be satisfied to come on Sunday and come back the
next Sunday without ever having attempted to make an impact for
Christ in the life of someone else. It’s no longer a matter of
them coming to us, but of us going and reaching out to them. Only
then will God bless us and
enlarge his kingdom through us.

A new
format is being developed for our young students. This time will
not only allow for learning and relationship building, but in
addition, there will be time set aside for an outreach project.
Students will be encouraged to create a handwritten card of
Christian friendship. Names to receive cards may include, but
are not limited to, persons who are ill or homebound, those in
military service or college students.
If you
would enjoy leading students in this ministry, please call the
church office.
What's Going On?
Reorganization of our church library is in progress. Amy Ball
has been working diligently in this difficult task. When you see
her, please extend a special thanks for her willingness to share
her time and talents.
In the
near future, plans are including an archive room, audio/visual
equipment area and a relevant curriculum room.
If you
have an interest in being a part of any of these exciting
projects please call the church office.

All-Church Fall Cleaning
Saturday, September 29, 9:00
a.m. to ?
You are encouraged to
participate in a much needed event. It is an over-whelming task
for just a few, but with all of us working together it will be a
fun and satisfying accomplishment for many.
Members of every Sunday School
class are asked to be responsible for their own classroom.
Please bring what you will need – rags, buckets, cleaning
supplies, etc. They will decide what needs to be done in their
rooms. Closets and bookshelves need to be cleaned out. If you
have items that you are unsure as to where they should go, but
you know that they don’t belong in your classroom, you may place
them in the hallways.
Plans are being made as to what
to do with the accumulation of unwanted materials. Possible
options include: donating usable items to needy churches, City
Rescue Mission, nursing homes, or reuse within our own church.
If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.
Please take time to talk and
plan with your fellow classmates so that this will be a
productive time. Our goal is to clean-out, freshen-up and make
our church building more inviting to both new and long-time
members.
You are vital to this church and
its continued success in revealing the love of Jesus Christ to
our community. Taking ownership in the physical needs of this
building is important. Your willingness to serve is appreciated.
If you are not a member of a
Sunday School class and are willing to help, please let me know
as soon as possible. You are going to be especially important to
the success of this event!
If your class is in need of
additional hands to help, please call the church office and let
us know. There are many willing and capable members of our
church family.
Please call with any questions,
comments or suggestions.

Fall Sunday Morning Schedule
We will
continue our present Sunday morning schedule beyond September 2 into
the Fall season. Sunday School will begin at 9:15 a.m. for all ages,
including child care for younger parents to be able to attend a
class. Worship will begin at 10:30 a.m. with more effort being made
to “blend” new and traditional music and liturgy methods together.
We ask for
your indulgence and patience in adjusting to new times and patterns.
There will be care and sensitivity given to all aspects and types of
worship experiences, in order to retain our heritage and tradition,
while still allowing the Holy Spirit to help us all experience a
sense of “the holy” in a transforming way in our lives.
Dedication and Renewal Sunday
September 9
After
worship service a pot-luck luncheon will be held for everyone in the
Assembly Room for fellowship and renewal of friendships.
Meat and
beverage will be provided. Last names starting with please bring:
A-I Dessert
J-R Casserole
S-Z Salad
Please call the church office
with your reservation (724-654-6657).
Congregational Meeting
A CONGREGATIONAL MEETING is
called by Session for Sunday, September 30, after worship. The
purpose of the meeting is to act upon two requests from Session
regarding the governance of our local church.
The first proposal will ask the
congregation to allow the church Nominating Committee to make its
report for electing officers for church governance each year at an
annual Fall meeting on the third Sunday of October after worship. No
other business would normally be transacted at this meeting. The
Nominating Committee will submit its names of persons for election
as Elders, Deacons, Auditor and the next year’s Nominating Committee
of four persons from the congregation at large at this Fall meeting.
If the congregation concurs, all officers could be trained in
November and December for their ordination and/or installation on
the second Sunday of January in the new year.
The second proposal asks the
congregation to reduce the size of Session from 24 elders to 18. All
present elders would continue to fulfill their terms. Each year,
beginning this Fall, two fewer elders will be nominated for the next three
years, thus reducing the number of Session members by attrition.
If the congregation accepts the
Session’s proposals, then this year’s Church Nominating Committee
will be prepared to nominate six elders in the class of 2010 on
October 21 at the new Fall meeting. Likewise, six Deacons, one
Auditor, and four members from the congregation at large for the
Church Nominating Committee will be nominated.
Since these proposals affect
changes in our by-laws, a two-thirds vote is required in both cases.
Session was unanimous in proposing these changes. Any questions can
be directed to a present Session member or Rev. Meyer. It is felt
across the board that these changes will make our church’s work more
efficient and effective, and that our leaders can be better prepared
and equipped to take office.

Caring Friends Update
The Caring Friends
Ministry Team has been busy this summer and enjoying their work. At
the present time, the team takes soup, rolls, and cookies to people
in assisted living who are unable to get to church and to anyone
having surgery or coming home from the hospital. There are many
other areas where we as a congregation can reach out and touch
someone’s life to let them know we care.
If you know of
someone who needs a “Caring Touch” please call the church office and
they will pass it on to the team. Also, if you know of a service
that you would like to give that would be helpful to others, please
pass that on also.
The Caring Friends
Ministry Team will be meeting at 7 p.m. on September 10 and would
like to welcome anyone who is interested in helping with this church
mission. Together, we can make a difference. Please plan to attend
and help at 7 p.m. in the Parlor.

Our Soldiers in Iraq
In
early July, the congregation was asked to give an offering to show
support for our two members who are serving in Iraq, Eric Probst and
Bobby Fullwood. The response was overwhelming and the families
involved were very moved. The congregation gave $1,000 to be divided
between these two young men serving our country.
Eric is serving in Baghdad and Bobby
is serving in Fallujah. Both are on the battle front and have
virtually no time off. Eric is on his second tour to Iraq, by his
own choice, and will be home in September. Bobby is on his first
tour and will be home next April.
Their only request from us as a
caring church family is for prayer. They also would really
appreciate hearing from you. If you want to send them a note, the

The Apostles' Build
Habitat Update
Many thanks to all who have helped in any way to make the
construction of the Franklin Avenue Habitat home a success!
Clen-Moore volunteers have played a major role in making a dream
come true for Sherry Signoriello and her children: son, Dana, and
daughter, Brooklyn.
Some of you may be disappointed to never have been
called upon to participate, even though you volunteered when we
first announced Clen-Moore’s involvement in the “Apostles Build”.
Here’s what happened: 1. We had an overload of volunteers in many
areas of expertise. 2. Because 12 churches have participated in the
“Apostles’ Build”, and because the weather has been ideal, the home
has gone up in record-breaking time. We simply could not call upon
all those that we had anticipated that we would need.
In an attempt to say “thank you” to all our Habitat
helpers, we would like for you to plan to attend the church service
on September 9th when you will be recognized for your contribution.
In the meantime, we thank you for your dedication and the generosity
of your prayers, your money, time and talents and skills.
Sincerely,
Yvonne Klingensmith

Have you had a
chance to contribute to the success of the “Apostles’ Build” home on
Franklin Avenue? The members of the Mary Circle invite all of the
women of the church to join them on Thursday, September 13th
at 9:30 A.M. Following devotions, Shirley Book, co-chairman (with
husband, Dave) of Clen-Moore’s fund raising for Habitat, will
display, describe, demonstrate and sell a myriad of products you
need and use every day: cosmetics, and items for personal use, home
and garden, health and nutrition, anti-aging, pet care, and many
others. The profit from all your purchases will benefit Clen-Moore’s
contribution to Habitat. Please join us!

Elizabeth Book with President of CCFC, Dr
Steve Douglass & his wife, Judy at Ft Collins, Co during the
Commissioning Banquet for new staff
ELIZABETH BOOK ACCEPTS POSITION WITH CAMPUS CRUSADE FOR CHRIST
In 2005, Elizabeth Book,
daughter of Debbie Book and granddaughter of Don and Nancy Smith,
did a one-year internship with Campus Crusade for Christ, an
interdenominational and international Christian ministry whose
mission is to build spiritual movements everywhere. Through God’s
grace, she was blessed to be financially supported by the church and
members of the congregation.
Elizabeth is now returning to work for Campus Crusade in a long-term
position. She has been placed at Ball State University in Muncie,
IN, where she will work with students, introducing them to Christ,
building them up in the foundations of their faith, and preparing
them to be sent out for a lifetime of ministry wherever they are
called.
Like many other mission organizations, Campus Crusade for Christ has
no central funds for paying salaries and ministry expenses. Before
Elizabeth can report to Ball State, she must find a team of
financial partners who are willing to give monthly in varying
amounts or special annual gifts.
As Elizabeth embarks on a more certain call and long term commitment
to the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ, I am asking all of our
congregation to support her in prayer and encouragement. Pray for
her effectiveness in learning her tasks, in her energy level, her
health and her winsomeness in her witness for Christ. Her mother and
her grandparents would appreciate your prayers on her behalf.
Our Evangelism/Mission Committee will soon be considering some
corporate level of support from our mission funds to enable
Elizabeth’s work at Ball State University as our congregation
partners with her in this enterprise of student ministry. I
encourage any of you, who may be able, to consider a monthly
sponsorship gift. Any amount will be appreciated, no matter how
small. Many small support gifts can add up to a significant amount
of funding.
For Elizabeth’s position, C.C.F.C. has determined that she must
raise her full support in the amount of $4,000 per month. Of course,
she does not receive all of that because health insurance,
administrative costs, social security and a modest pension
allocation are involved in the total package. Her actual salary is
much less than $4,000 per month.
We’re asking your help for her by informing your friends and
neighbors about this opportunity for them to participate in a
Christ-centered ministry of love and outreach, also.
Details for support, prayer, and encouragement will be available in
the church office. For e-mailers or note writers, we will print
addresses, etc., in the Messenger once the information is available
as soon as Elizabeth is able to begin her work. |

THE MISSIONAL
CHURCH |
|
PARTNERSHIP FOR MISSIONAL CHURCH
On
April 18, 2006, the Session approved the participation of
Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church in the Partnership for
Missional Church Program™.
Subsequently, the Session appointed a "Steering Team" consisting
of the pastor and seven of our members to guide the congregation
on a journey of spiritual discernment and theological reflection
that would enable us to develop a missional vocation and to walk
into God's preferred and promised future for this congregation.
The mission of the
Partnership for Missional Church Programä is to
listen to God's specific call to us and to let God send us and,
through the Holy Spirit, empower us to participate in God's
mission in the world, so that both our outreach and our life
together as a church are a witness to Jesus Christ.
The Program consists of a
four-part process. The first part is devoted to Discovery.
The second emphasizes Experimentation, and the
third involves Visioning. The final part of the
process is the on-going implementation of the long-range plans
developed as a result of the spiritual discernment acquired from
the first three parts.
Each
MAT will meet regularly over the next ten months to study their
assigned challenge in greater depth and to work through a
carefully designed Challenge-Resolution Process that will lead
to the identification and development of an action plan for
initiating missional change with respect to that challenge.
These individuals will have accepted a great deal of
responsibility for completing a very difficult assignment and
will need every member's support.
In keeping with our endeavor
to develop the capacity of "listening" to others, you are
invited to offer them your suggestions for defining and dealing
with these challenges. From time-to-time, they may need you to
volunteer your time and talents in implementing an action plan. |
Most importantly, they will
need you to pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal God's preferred
and promised future for this congregation.
From September of 2006
through May of 2007, the Steering Team focused on the
Discovery part of the process. The purpose of that part was
to assist our congregation in growing toward a missional
vocation by helping them ask and answer these five questions.
Where are we? Whose are we? What is God doing? How is God
sending us? How are we living according to God's future?
Emphasis was placed on innovating the capacity of "listening" to
others. By listening, we sought to discover God's mission for
this congregation and to identify our partners in carrying out
that mission.
The second part of the
process, the Experimentation part, was launched on June
24, 2007. At a special Session Retreat held on that date, the
Elders, in their role as the governing body of our church, were
asked to identify one or more primary challenges facing
Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church for which there is no readily
identifiable solution.
After considerable
deliberation, Session identified two challenges.
Challenge
1:
How can
Clen-Moore best demonstrate Christ's love through the wise use
of the McGill facility to meet the needs of the community,
including the needs of children and older adults?
Challenge 2: How can Clen-Moore best create disciples of
present members and simultaneously attract the 18 to 45 year
olds to join us in worship fellowship and grow with us in
knowledge of, and service to, Christ?
The Elders
empowered the Steering Team to form a Missional Action
Team (MAT) for each challenge and suggested the
names of church members who might be recruited to serve on those
MATs. |

2007-2008
Broadway Shows
Time for the new season of Pittsburgh Broadway
Shows!
September 22: “My Fair Lady”.
This is the 50th year of this show. This glorious, new
production features one of Broadway’s most beloved scores.
October 27: “Twelve Angry Men”.
Twelve walks of life and only two ways to rule; guilty or not
guilty. What seems like an open-and-shut murder case becomes a
twisted puzzle of prejudice and intrigue.
November 24: “Avenue Q”. A
hilarious show full of heart and tunes to hum. Avenue Q is about
trying to make it in New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank
account.
January 19: “The Lion King”.
See it again to pick up all the things you missed the first time,
like the unforgettable visual images and musical score.
February 2: “Sweeny Todd”. The
legendary demon barber, hell-bent on revenge, takes up with his
enterprising neighbor to slice their way through London’s upper
crust.
March 1: “The Drowsy
Chaperone”. The new musical comedy that is swooping into town with
tons of laughs and the most Tony Awards of any musical on Broadway.
April 12: “The Wedding Singer”.
Robbie is the life of the party until his fiancée leaves him at the
altar. Robbie tries to spoil every wedding he is to sing at. This
show takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good,
collars were up and the wedding singer was Robbie.
Sounds like a great
new series. These are all Saturday matinees. |
