Text Box: “THOUGHT STARTER”
Summer is the time when the pace of life slows a bit. It is a time to catch-up and relax. Every summer, I like to do these things as well as prepare for the fall. One of the things I do is put together a summer reading list. What follows is a list of books that I have read or reread several times, most of which revolve around faith and the life of the church. They are not difficult reads, but they will challenge how you think about the church in the world today.
The first is one I read about every other year: Basic Christianity by John Stott. This classic has sold over a million copies since it was first published. Stott explains in simple English who Jesus is, why Jesus came, what Jesus did and how we are to respond. It answers the question, in a simple way, “What does it mean to be a Christian?”
Mere Discipleship: Radical Christianity in a Rebellious World is written by Lee Camp. As one reviewer wrote, “Camp insists that we wrestle with uncomfortable and impolite questions, daring to ask what everyday life might look like if Christians pledged allegiance to God’s inbreaking kingdom rather than the kingdoms of this world.” The book is challenging yet accessible.
The Present Future: Six tough Questions for the Church wrestles with the six most important new realities the church must address, including: recapturing the spirit of Christianity and replacing “church growth” with a wider vision of kingdom growth; developing disciples instead of church members; fostering the rise of new leadership, focusing on spiritual formation rather than church programs and shifting from prediction and planning to preparation for the challenges of an uncertain world. It sounds heavy, but it is an easy read.
The next book points to churches that are responding to these questions. Treasure in Clay Jars looks at nine very different churches and how they faithfully responded to their changing neighborhoods and realities of life. These congregations are “clay jars,” that is, none of them are perfect, but each carries in its witness a remarkable treasure that points to God’s power and to God’s purposes in the world. The book highlights eight patterns these churches share that help reshape their communities.
If you are looking to read something in a specific area, please ask and I will be happy to help you find a good read for the summer.
                             Sincerely yours in Christ,
Chris Weichman

 Baby Shower of Blessings

Baby showers are such fun, and you are invited to one that serves also as a mission outreach to our community.

Buy something for a baby, wrap it with love and joy, and bring it to the Parlor on Saturday, June 14th at 11:00 A.M.

We hope to have some representatives from the Pregnancy Resource Center and the Crisis Shelter who will be delighted to have new clothing and baby care supplies to pass along to mothers in need.

Following the shower, we will serve a light lunch. The Mary Circle is sponsoring this event, and we have planned it for a Saturday so that all you working girls can share the joy.

   Mark you calendars: June 14th, 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.

Attention - Staff Members, Elders, and Deacons

The Evangelism and Mission Committee has made name tags for current staff members, elders and deacons. We are asking for these leaders of the church to wear a name tag on Sunday morning. We hope that we will be easily recognizable to newcomers and visitors to the church who may have a question or need information.

The tags are stored in the top right drawer in the storage cupboard in the Narthex. Please pick it up as you enter church and return it to the drawer when departing.

Any member of the congregation who would like to have a name tag prepared for them, should contact Debbie Book at 724-658-1622 or the church office.

PRIME TIMERS CORNER

Greetings,

With summer approaching, the Prime Timers morning Bible Study will be held at the Hutchison Center in Pearson Park for the months of June, July and August. The first meeting at the park will be on June 10. Pearson Park is one of the beautiful spots in our area. We are fortunate that it is available for our use during the summer.

Come join us on Tuesday, June 10 at 9:30 for coffee, fellowship and another uplifting message from Steve Plyler.

      See you Tuesday, Bob McConnell

 Cancelled Trips

June 12:  “The Ohio Amish” & “The “Wilds”.  This is cancelled because we didn’t have enough response.

Aug. 2-8:  “Circle Lake Michigan Cruise” This is cancelled also.

New Trip

Sunday, Aug. 24:  “Vickie Lawrence & Mama”

Enjoy an early dinner stop enroute, on own, at Bob Evans in Mentor, Ohio. Reserved seats await at Mentor Fine Arts Theater for “Vickie Lawrence & Mama”.Vickie Lawrence is one of the most beloved television personalities of her generation. Plucked out of total obscurity as a high school senior, Vickie went on to become part of the now-legendary cast of the “Carol Burnett Show”.

At the ripe age of 24, she created her most endearing character to date, Thelma Harper, or “Mama” as she is better known to her fans. The show is a mixture of stand-up comedy, music and observations about real life.

Tour includes: roundtrip deluxe Motorcoach transportation and a reserved seat for the show. Price per person: $80.00.

We will depart from Clen-Moore at 1:30 p.m. and return approximately at 9:30 p.m.

Remaing 2008 Carousel Shows

July 16:  “Viaggio” is brought to life by the “el Circo” troupe. Watch the dazzling performances including beautiful gravity- defying acts, aerial tricks, and ethereal acrobatics all set to evocative music.

September 10:  “Wizard of Oz”. One of the most beloved musicals of all time. Relive the classic! Now is the perfect time to revisit Oz to see what happens to the three witches of Oz.

November 19:  “All Shook Up”. Elvis songs, sung by the entire cast. Heat up the season with this sizzling, energetic, musical told through more than 24 of Elvis Presley songs. Music, mischievous madness and unexpected pairings are sure to rock the house.

These trips to the Carousel are the easiest you can make. The only walking involved is to your seat in the theater. The trip includes: bus transportation, drivers tip, dinner of your choice, waiters tip and last but not least is the excellent show. The bus leaves Clen-Moore Church at 10:30 a.m., has a stop at the Country Club Plaza and is home by 6:00 p.m. Call me (Peggy Byler, 724-652-8918) if you’re interested or have any questions.
