Text Box: “THOUGHT STARTER”
Our character is mainly shaped by the people with whom we socialize. Children are shaped in their early years by their family, as they grow their circle of relationships widens to include friends and classmates. As adults we are influenced by a wide array of people; those with whom we eat, play, and work. It is our primary social community that makes us what we are at the deepest level.
As followers of Jesus, the church should act as our primary, but not exclusive social community. So the question is, “How does the church shape us? How should we be shaped differently than the world around us?” The apostle Paul in his various letters to different churches deals with these questions. He deals with these questions in what I call the “one another” passages. These verses give shape to the relationships Christians are to have with one another:
Honor one another (Romans 12:10)
Accept one another just as Jesus accepted you (Romans 15:7)
Bear with one another (Colossians 3:12-13)
Forgive one another just as Jesus has forgiven you (Ephesians 4:2, 32)
Pray for and confess sins to one another (James 5:16)
Encourage one another (Hebrews 3:13)
Instruct and confront one another (Romans 15:14 & Galatians 6:1-6)
Warn one another (1 Thessalonians 5:14)
In the Gospel of John Jesus says, “I no longer call you servants… Instead I have called you friends.” As Christians, we are friends of Christ and friends to each other. Friends have certain expectations of each other. The list of “one another’s” is a list of expectations for those who are friends of Jesus. I suggest that you read them at some point and reflect on your relationships with your family and friends to see where the Lord may be leading you to become a better friend. In the fall, we will look at some of these passages and how the challenge us to be followers of Jesus and friends to one another.
                                          Sincerely yours in Christ,
                                           Chris

In the Life of Our Church

Mary Circle News

Many thanks to all who contributed to the

success of the last two Mary Circle events.

Picture the most beautiful array of

homemade goodies that you can imagine

 – appetizers, soup, veggies, salads, breads

and desserts.  Twenty-five women

participated in the May 24th Taste-a-thon

which was so successful it is bound to

become an annual event.  Some women sent

in dishes even though they were unable to

attend.  Joan Warren and the office staff

duplicated the recipes and made up

booklets for each participant.  We all

went home with smiles, and maybe a

few extra temporary pounds.

Our numbers swelled to thirty who

wrapped gifts and proudly displayed

them at the June 14th baby shower for

the benefit of the Crisis Shelter and the

Pregnancy Center.  Melissa Stellfox,

Education and Training Director for the

Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County, gave

a personal testimony of her experience

with spousal abuse and how it has helped

her to relate to clients who turn to the

Shelter for help. Lindsay Young explained

how the Pregnancy Resource Center helps

young mothers, mostly unwed, make

decisions about their pregnancy, and offers

them physical, psychological, educational,

social, and mental support if they choose to

keep and raise their child. A salad, rolls,

and dessert luncheon followed.  Before

leaving, Lindsay and Melissa divided

approximately a hundred items of clothing

and accessories for their service organiza-

tions. Again, some who were unable to

attend brought gifts to the office for this

event.  Many thanks to a generous

congregation.  Don’t you just love this

church!

Since the Mary Circle is trying to expand its mission ministry to be more inclusive of all

women of all ages, we are considering a

name change.  We would like to rid our

group from the image of the “OCL”

(Old Church Ladies) and a new name just

might help do that.  Andrea Lamb

suggested that the PW (Presbyterian

Women) would be willing to offer a prize

incentive in a new-name contest: a $20.00

gasoline gift card!  Judges will be an

outside, unbiased group.  Here’s your

chance.  To hide your identity, please just

indicate your phone number on your

submission.  Fill in, tear off, and place your

entry on the offering plate or turn it in to

the church office.

Caring Friends Ministry

As the summer season is on us, we are constantly reminded of our need to show willingness to share with others what we take for granted. If you are willing to make a short, friendly visit to a person less fortunate than yourself, please call the church office.

Let us know if you are willing to be a Care Giver on the Caring Friends Team.

If you know of someone who needs a touch of caring love from the Caring Friends Team, please contact the church office.

We will share with those who would welcome a visit, and at the same time receive a blessing for ourselves by helping others to enjoy the day just a little more. Thank you.

Dear Caring Friends:

Just a note to thank you for the visit and the bag of goodies. Since Ray (Keffer) and I are old friends, we enjoyed getting caught up.

                          Sincerely, Dave Book

The Y2K Class would like to sincerely thank all those who supported the Rummage Sale on Saturday, May 31st. The sale was a huge success with a profit of $1,000. The proceeds from the event will be given to the Youth Mission Trip to Conneaut, Ohio and to defray costs of the 2008 Dominican Republic Mission Trip. We had a great day of fun, fellowship and community outreach. The Y2K Class was overwhelmed with your support and generosity. Watch and read your Messenger closely. We may plan another sale for the future…so as you clean, save your saleable items.

Dear Friends:

Thanks to all the people that sent cards, called and sent food, and for all the visits. The surgery went well and I’m feeling better.

           Sincerely, Martha Robinson

Dear Clen-Moore Friends:

Thank you for your cards and prayers during my total knee replacement operation on May 13th. A special thank you to Esther Drane for her nice visit. Thank you to the Caring Friends for the delicious soup, dinner rolls and cookies. I am recovering at home and doing physical therapy. As soon as the doctor allows me to drive, I will be back to church again.

     See you then, Sandra Robison

Thanks to all our Clen-Moore Friends, Rev. Weichman, Steve Plyler and Jackie Bush for their prayers, thoughts, calls and visits while Frank was hospitalized. Thanks also to the Deacons for the delicious funeral luncheon. God bless you all.

John Verone (brother of Larry Verone)
Frank Steinbrink
Claire Galbreath

Missing

All the white table cloths from the Irvine Class cupboard in the Parlor decided they did not like those people any more. The cloths just up and walked away. Does anyone in the church know where they moved? We like to keep track of all the Irvine Class items. We needed them but did not know where they moved. Do you?

Do Without Bank

This mission project was introduced by Presbyterian Women of Shenango Presbytery several years ago to acknowledge hunger and initiate a way that we could help alleviate it in our community, county and country.

Participants are encouraged to eliminate a food item daily (or weekly) and to put the cost of the item in a small box or bank. We encourage individuals and families to begin now to fill a box (or bank) for a 1-month/6 week project and you will have your donation come this Fall when monies will be dedicated at the Fall Gathering.

Headed for College?

Whether you are currently in college or just starting this Fall, we would like to send you the Messenger. Please provide the church office with your address and the level of year you are in.
